Story #4

I breastfed my son.  I never thought that I would do it, but when I got pregnant, my husband was actually the one that thought that we should do it.. He found all kinds of articles about the benefits of breastfeeding. How beneficial it would be for our baby.  So, I decided that I would at least try.  When he was born, the first day or so was pretty hard to get him to latch on.  But I stuck with it and it turned out to be so easy and convenient.

Breastfeeding does not mean that you have to stay home all of the time.  I found that it became so easy to cover up (always have a blanket with you!) and many stores have "family" rooms for breastfeeding moms ( or even dressing rooms work in a pinch).

My goal was to do it for 6 months, but it was so easy and so healthy for our baby that I was able to do it until a week before his 1 year birthday. So, he never had formula and he was old enough at just shy of a year to have regular milk. I was a little worried about the weaning part- I had heard horror stories... BUT it wasn't a problem.  I think I had pain (and wore ice pads on my chest) for maybe 2 days.  I just breastfed him once a day until I was done. He had baby food and milk for the rest of the day.

My son is now 3 and has never has an earache *knock on wood* and rarely has been sick, and I am told has always been very smart for his age (all moms think this eh? ;).  These were some of the articles that we had read when I was pregnant, so maybe they were right?

So, for us, breastfeeding was the right decision and a success story.  I recommend if your able, to try.

Good Luck!
